English parents/aunts/uncles etc etc are you sick of american kids tv shows?
I have 2 nieces who are obsessed with all this american cr*p that we have on tv these days. I am a 20 year old without any kids of my own and i can tell you the name of every character in high school musical, its taking over the world i’m telling you!!!

Here’s a story to illustrate my point: I was sat in the car with my niece the other day waiting for my sis in law to come out of the shop and she asks to play I Spy. I say ok, you go first, she says i spy with my little eye, something beginning with T. I look around and reel off everything i can see beginning with T. Eventually i give up, she points over to a dustbin and says ‘trash can’. I was like you watch too much tv girl, we live in england for christs sake!!

What happened to the programmes i used to watch as a kid like button moon and the magic roundabout!! Lol.
Sean i agree, i have nothing against americans but why can’t we keep england as it is without turning our kids into mini yanks lol. And amy, yes brum!! My god i loved that programme. I feel like digging out my old kids videos now just for old times sake. I’m boycotting it though, i brought my 3 year old nephew a kipper the dog dvd for christmas and its his new favourite programme. Tee-hee.
Lois, i’m not on about all american programmes, yes they have brought us some great things, like the simpsons, 24, lost etc etc, i mean kids tv like high school musical and hannah montanna arggghhh!

and Brum! Bump the elephant! scooby doo! Oh the good old days.
Best you can do is point out what everything’s called when the say that sorta stuff. they’ll soon learn.

not at all. i don’t know what i would do without Mickey Mouse clubhouse, Handy Manny the Doodlebops etc etc! my son loves them, and i actually hate the english cartoons like the magic roundabout and crap like that.

the colours are much more vibrant on the American ones. and they are very educational as well. i don’t mind as long as my son likes them

I am not a parent but I HATE that programme Sweet 16 with a passion and I hate pimp my ride and Hannah Montanna.

Here in Manchester kids now say dollar.

I also hate the fact that we now have cheer leading and proms in the UK.

I have noting against Americans though.

My Niece watches all that US rubbish, and even calls Films "Movies".
She regularly gets ticked off for talking in an American accent.

I also agree that US proms have invaded our shores, and it drives me mad, even trick or treat which the Americans have popularised and made it unique drives me insane.

Why do we have to import their customs when we have some decent ones of our own.

What about the Simpson’s?!!!??
Lois | Jan 13, 2009

You know, for the teletubbies alone someone should be shot! I hated that show and got so tired of hearing about those twisted little beings!!

Then when I turned my TV to PBS one day and saw Boohbah… OMG I could have died. I swear they are nothing but gassy fartballs shooting all over the place!!

And you complain about kids American television???
az_mommma | Jan 13, 2009

Bob the Builder with an American accent, why do they let it happen. I am forever telling my boys to speak English and not American. I have a little problem we live in Denmark, and they speak Danish and ENGLISH, I am a little worried there English teacher is American, So we may have some heated discussions.

There is no water shed here for children (type of tv prog) and you can hear f’s and b’s even in childrens programs and I hope you are sitting down!!!! and even by teachers in school,

There are some great films from across the water, as there are from our own shores.

need a cup of tea to chill out

best of luck

What do you call a trash can in england?

If you hate American television so much, maybe you need to go live in a cave. why does it bother you what your nieces enjoy? I wouldn’t tell my kids not to watch Monty Python because "We’re American!"

How very closed minded of you.

No – because that’s what the off switch is for. Kids don’t HAVE to watch constant TV!
cathrl69 | Jan 13, 2009

Even as an American parent, I agree with you. It’s very difficult to screen and avoid certain shows. Definitely not perfect, but have tried to expose my son to a diverse group of shows. When I read "Brum" on here I laughed out loud. PBS does carry more diverse shows and shows with international appeal.

In our home:
- have banned the watching of, singing of, or reciting of dialogue from
H.S. Musical
- do not watch the Disney Channel
- do not watch the trendy shows

Some parents would rather crack open a book, take our kids to a museum or family center, enjoy parks and outdoor fun.

Not every American buys into the American commercial "scene"

my kids enjoy watching hannah montana , raven , suite life of Zack n cody etc etc and OH MY GOD i hate them !!!!!
I especially hate it when my children try and copy them and the way they talk ,I limit the amount they are allowed to watch and try and encourage them to watch british programmes ( i mean like tracey beaker or dick and dom etc) but they want to watch what their friends watch.
dinnerlady | Jan 13, 2009

My little one watches UK and US tv shows and loves them all. I think just monitor how much they watch and if its a suitable programme. I like how positive some US shows are compared to the ones in the UK. It might not be every ones cup of tea, but for example – ‘Barney’ is great. It’s lively, fun, educational and very positive for little ones.
